FELLOWSHIPS – FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
- Who is eligible for a fellowship?
All SMC faculty (full-time and adjunct) are eligible to apply. Only one application per faculty member may be submitted.
- Do I need my department chair's approval before I apply?
Your department chair must sign your application before it is submitted to the committee. Your chair's signature is required as acknowledgement that you are applying for a fellowship. Such signature does not in any way imply his/her endorsement or approval for the fellowship.
- Where do I get a fellowship application?
Applications are available from the Sabbitacls & Fellowships Committee's website.
- When is the deadline for submitting my application?
This year’s deadline is April 23, 2010.
- Whom can I ask for help with my proposal?
A list of recent fellowship recipients is available on the committee’s website, perhaps these individuals may be willing to guide you in the application process. Colleagues in your department may be helpful in generating ideas and reviewing your proposal as well. The committee members are not able to review your application with you.
- Is it possible to submit a proposal in collaboration with another faculty member?
Yes. However, if funded, only one fellowship will be granted. That is, the $1,500 award will be shared.
- How can I view successful sample proposals?
We currently do not make these proposals available directly through our committee. You may consider soliciting one from a past fellowship recipient.
- Who evaluates my proposal?
The committee members (faculty and administrators) will meet to discuss and evaluate proposals in early May 2010. Up to seven fellowship proposals may be selected. "Successful" proposals will then be forwarded to the Academic Senate and the Board of Trustees for approval.
- Should I apply again using the same proposal if that proposal was previously rejected?
Faculty whose proposals are not accepted are encouraged to reapply. However, it is wise to review your proposal before resubmitting it. Make sure that all pertinent information as requested in the proposal is fully addressed. Please note that the committee is under no obligation to grant a fellowship on a second attempt. Your proposal will be reviewed like any other.
- Can two or more fellowships be awarded in the same year to members of the same department?
Yes.
- What am I expected to do upon completion of my sabbatical?
Faculty are expected to provide the committee with two copies of a report summarizing the experiences/outcomes of the fellowship within 30 days after completion--no later than 30 days after the conclusion of the semester for which the fellowship was granted. The report should be based on the original plan submitted. This report, once accepted and approved the Committee, will be posted on our website and archived at the Library for use by individuals at the college.
- When will I be notified if I am a fellowship recipient?
We anticipate that notifications will go out by May 15, 2010.
