A RECAP OF Fall 2011

Here are some of the highlights from Fall 2011 in the SMC Associates sponsored events:

Allen Rucker was the featured speaker for Disability Month in September, speaking on Disability in America; he was inspirational to many in the audience, demonstrating how one is not disabled by one's disabilities but rather is able by the abilities one has.

In October, many board members attended The Glory of Gershwin at the Broad Stage--this is an event co-sponsored by the Associates, featuring Gershwin biographer Rodney Greenberg, in a multi-media presentation of the life and works of George Gershwin.

In our signature Global Connection Lecture Series, we saw Dr. Michael Diamond of USC talking about education in the 21st Century, and Greg Wong, a corporate lawyer, talking about the impact of social media at the work place and employment landscape.  Not to mention a very humorous and intriguing Tom Plate spoke on The Asian Power Elite, with well-known film critic, Kenny Turan, ending the series on a high note on Foreign films.

The Fall UC Press Lecture featured a very illustrious Antronette Yancey,Professor in the Department of Health Services and Co-Director of the UCLA Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Equity at the School of Public Health, UCLA, on  her book "Instant Recess:  Building a Fit Nation 10 Minutes at a time", who literally moved the audience!
