For Students

Who should I pick for my +1?
The person you pick can be a family member or friend….really anyone. Keep in mind it should be someone who knows you and encourages you. Basically, someone who is an expert in supporting you!

What do I need to do to sign up?
First, think carefully about who you would like as your +1 then go talk to them about it. If your choice of coach agrees, go to the GRIT website at www.smc.edu/grit and click on the Sign Up link. Once you tell “You+1” who you’d like to have as your +1, an email will be sent to your +1. "You+1" will be sending emails to share suggestions on how to support you throughout the semester.

Will the +1 have access to my grades?
Absolutely not. Your coach won’t know anything about your grades or attendance unless you decide to share that information. Your +1 is there to give you emotional support and encouragement like reminding you to take a break, to eat well, and get rest before finals. They're there for you.

How much time will this take?
That is for you and your +1 to decide. Ideally you’d have contact at least once a week, but it really depends on what you need.

What best piece of advice would you give me?
Focus on the student’s strengths to overcome their challenges.

How often should we meet?
You and your student will decide. Ideally you’d have contact at least once a week, but it really depends on what he or she needs.

What should we do when we meet?
It’s a time for you both to get together and talk about how things are going. Ideally, you will listen and provide the support and encouragement.

Who can I contact if I have a serious issue?
Check out the College Resources link on this webpage or you can email YouPlusOn@smc.edu. Someone from the "You+1" team will respond as soon as possible.
