Acting for Dancers

Actress who has originated and played a variety of lead roles in films and on the stage—and who earned her BFA in Drama at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts (where she studied Ballet at Joffrey and Modern Dance at Alvin Ailey)—will lead acting exercises designed to help dancers reveal their own unique talent and bring storytelling and authentic emotion to their dance. Wear comfortable clothing.

Balinese Dance

One of Bali’s most accomplished and versatile dancers and musicians—who is currently chair of the World Music Program at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) School of Music—will present a workshop/lecture demonstration that introduces students to the theatrical, social, and religious traditions of Balinese dance, including the fundamentals of dance forms and various mask characters. Wear comfortable clothing.

Baroque Dance

Historian, dancer, and a founding member of the Baroque dance troupe Les Menus Plaisirs—who is also an associate professor of Dance at the University of California, Riverside—will lead a class in the noble style of dancing that emerged in Louis XIV’s reign, complete with bodily stances and steps and gestures, as well as the bows or “honors” with which dancers and people in everyday life acknowledged each other. Wear soft, full-soled shoes (or sock feet) and comfortable clothing that fully reveals your arms, knees, lower legs, and feet.
