Brian Stone, Director. November program presents "Eighteenth Century Perspectives," a musical 'look' back in time, with music that includes Edvard Grieg's romantic 19th-century Suite from Holberg's Time, William Schuman's modernist 20th-century riff on Colonial American tunes in New England Triptych, and from the seminal pivot year of 1800 itself, Beethoven's Symphony No. 1. December concert showcases "The Great Outdoors" with musical scenes from four continents: from North America, Aaron Copland's An Outdoor Overture; from Europe, Bedrich Smetana's "From Bohemia's Fields and Groves" from My Country; from Asia, Alexander Borodin's In the Steppes of Central Asia; and from South America, Argentinian Alberto Ginastera's riotous Four Dances from the Ballet Estancia.

SMC Music Lecture-Recital

Yulia Kozlova, Director. Terezín—a concentration camp where Nazis sent Jewish musicians, composers, artists, scientists, and some of the most brilliant people from many European countries—was famous for the frequency and quality of cultural events that took place during its existence. Most of the Terezín inmates perished, but we can still hear their voices through their music in a lecture-recital that features piano works by Viktor Ullmann, Gideon Klein, and Karel Berman.
