SMC Opera Theatre Presents The Tales of Hoffmann by Jacques Offenbach

The Tales of HoffmannJanelle DeStefano and Mercedes Juan Musotto, Directors. Hoffmann, a writer, tells the stories of his failed love affairs through a magical lens — tales of a beautiful mechanical doll, an irresistible courtesan, and a voice from the grave — while the Muse calls him back to his art. Chorosynthesis Singers with SMC Concert Chorale, SMC Chamber Choir, and SMC Symphony Orchestra

Jeremiah Selvey, Conductor. Elizabeth Stoyanovich, Conductor. Wendy Moy, Guest Conductor. The SMC Concert Chorale, SMC Chamber Choir, SMC Symphony Orchestra, and members of in-residence professional choir Chorosynthesis Singers combine forces to tell the stories of those who have changed the world through the lenses of their disabilities. The collaborative performance celebrates Ludwig von Beethoven’s birth (1770) and explores how he broke the silence of his deafness to revolutionize the field of music. Program includes new works commissioned for the concert, the final movement of Symphony No. 9 and Jake Runestad’s “A Silence Haunts Me,” which portrays the vulnerable letter Beethoven wrote disclosing his hearing loss to his brother. Part of the SMC Choral Scholars Residency. Sponsored in part by the SMC Foundation.
