Eric Abraham and The Broad Stage present
Isango Ensemble – Young Vic Production of
The Magic Flute (Impempe Yomlingo)
OCT 8-12, 2014
From Sir Ian McKellen to Archbishop Desmond Tutu, everyone is raving about Isango Ensemble, the South African company making its Southern California debut at The Broad Stage. Without a string section in sight, Mozart’s fairy-tale opera about love and redemption is boldly re-imagined-South African style! Winner of the Olivier Award for “Best Musical Revival in London” and co-produced by Eric Abraham, Isango’s The Magic Flute is a dizzying array of marimbas, swirling dancers, and brightly patterned costumes. The twenty singers, many of who come from Cape Town’s surrounding townships, pack enough vocal energy to raise the roof, and leave you with “a rare sense of life-enhancing joy” (Sunday Times, UK). Be the first to experience this international box office hit when it makes its rare appearance stateside.
With special thanks to South African Airways – “Africa’s Most Awarded Airline”

THU / DEC 4, 2014 / 7:30PM
Cory Richards & Mike Libecki,
Climbers and Photographer
Few had seen it, and no one had ever set foot on it. Those factors made Bertha’s Tower, a 2,000-foot spire in Antarctica’s remote Wohlthat Range, irresistible to a small team of accomplished climbers led by veteran Mike Libecki. Irresistible-but also nearly inaccessible. As reported in the September 2013 National Geographic, Libecki, climber-photographer Cory Richards, and two colleagues battled extreme cold, furious katabatic winds, and fickle weather in an epic, ten-day climb to the summit. Join Libecki and Richards for a humorous but gripping firsthand account of this first ascent at the bottom of the world.

Chris Lemmon as Jack Lemmon in
Jack Lemmon Returns
[The Edye]
JAN 7-25, 2015
Chris Lemmon, son of Hollywood legend Jack Lemmon (Some Like It Hot, The Odd Couple), joins us at The Broad Stage for an immensely personal, and ultimately heartwarming story about his Academy Award-winning father and their enduring relationship. Written and directed by Hershey Felder and performed by Chris as his father, Jack Lemmon Returns is a one-man show that captures the magic of a bygone era, when Marilyn Monroe, Gregory Peck, James Cagney, Jimmy Stewart, and Shirley MacLaine were but a handful of stars who would pass through the Lemmons’ Hollywood Hills home. Performed in a musical story-telling style that includes George and Ira Gershwin’s “Love is Here to Stay” and “’S Wonderful,” Jack Lemmon Returns is a loving tribute to a world-famous dad, told with respect and dignity.

Support made possible in part by a generous contribution from Linda and Michael Keston.
