Welcome to the Communication and Media Studies Department at Santa Monica College. Our department includes four disciplines: Communication Studies, Film, Journalism, and Media. These programs study communication in all its forms. From interpersonal speech to filmmaking to video production to news writing, students receive excellent theory-based training, as well as professional hands-on experience. The Communication and Media Studies Department is also the home to The Corsair, SMC’s award-winning newspaper, the campus radio station, Corsair Radio, the innovative Promo Pathways program and the taping of campus activities, including sporting events, debates, and theater arts presentations.
Our passionate, dedicated and exceptionally trained professors are here to serve students. Our faculty introduces our students to a variety of communication theories, from a detailed look at how the media portrays race and gender to hands-on work in film, video, web and newspaper production in preparation for both transfer and employment.
Student clubs include a traveling competitive debate team, a film club that showcases student productions at the end of the semester and a media production club that collaboratively develops students’ media and artistic talents.
Our alumni have built amazing careers. We also connect students with industry leaders through guest speakers, internships and the Promo Pathway program that trains students to write, produce and edit promo videos.
