Communication & Media Studies Department

Welcome

The Communication & Media Studies Department at Santa Monica College consists of five major disciplines: Communication Studies, Broadcasting, Film Studies, Journalism, & Media Studies. The unifying element to these programs is the study of communication in all its forms, from interpersonal speech to filmmaking, from video production to news writing. Students receive training in a variety of communication theories, from a detailed look at how the media has dealt with issues of race and gender to hands-on work in film, video, and newspaper production. Look for our classes in the school schedule under the headings: media studies, communication studies, film studies, and journalism.

The department supports a number of student clubs, including a debate team that travels to competitions, and a film club where student films are showcased at the end of each semester. The Journalism program includes newspaper production and online news production classes.
