Welcome
The Communication Department at Santa Monica College consists of five major disciplines: Broadcasting, Communication, Film Studies, Journalism, & Speech. The unifying element to these programs is the study of communication in all its forms, from interpersonal speech to filmmaking, from video production to news writing. Students receive training in a variety of communication theories, from a detailed look at how the media has dealt with issues of race and gender to hands-on work in film, video, and newspaper production. Look for our classes in the school schedule under the headings: broadcasting, communication, film studies, journalism, and speech.
The department supports a number of student clubs, including a debate team that travels to competitions, and a film club where student films are showcased at the end of each semester. The Journalism program includes newspaper production and online news production classes.
