Teacher Academy of Santa Monica College
The Santa Monica College Teacher Academy is a distinctive campus community for prospective educators of children from birth through 12th grade. The Teacher Academy (run by the Education/Early Childhood Education Department of Santa Monica College) offers meaningful education courses and fieldwork experiences and a wide variety of support services and grants to assist our students in achieving their academic, professional or personal goals.
The mission of the of the Teacher Academy at Santa Monica College is to prepare professional educators who effectively demonstrate the knowledge, competencies, and skills necessary to teach children in ways that enhance their overall growth and global citizenship. We are committed to the development of reflective teachers, who make ethically, theoretically, and pedagogically sound decisions when working with children and their families.
The Teacher Academy provides the necessary coursework, fieldwork, mentors and individualized support to successfully prepare prospective teachers to succeed as quality professionals in education.
Our program offers options for professional early childhood education certification, transfer to four-year institutions to complete K-12 teacher certification and professional development. All options are designed to educate and prepare students to work with linguistically and culturally diverse groups of children and families in schools, centers, and homes. Courses are offered during the day, in the evening, on weekends and online.
We are not, however, a credential granting program for K-12 educators. Students who already have a Bachelor’s degree should contact the credential office at a university or four-year college.
