Now in his 41st year of coaching swimming and water polo and his 10th year at Santa Monica College, Steven Contarsy, PhD., brings a vast array of hands-on knowledge from coaching at every level - from age-group, high school, and college. This summer, Coach Contarsy had one of his athletes competing at the United States Olympic Swimming trials. In 2000, his first year as the head coach of the Men's and Women's swimming and diving program, Coach Contarsy led the team to a third place finish in conference and an 8th place finish in State. The teams record was (7 -1) tying with perennial champions Ventura and Cuesta. In 2008, his teams finished with a 5-2 record and another 3rd place finish in the Western State Conference. The team had another 8th place finish in State and eleven SMC swimmers earned All-American honors in 2008.
A student athlete in swimming and water polo at California State University, at Northridge (CSUN), coach Contarsy graduated with at BA in Physical Education and a MS in Exercise Physiology including a single-subject teaching credential in Physical Education. He also graduated from USC with a PhD. in Exercise Physiology. In 1997 the California Coaches Association honored him as the 1997 Coach of the Year.
Since 2002 the SMC aquatics program has been training and competing in the Santa Monica Swim Center. The center (pools) has become the number one recruiting tool for bringing aquatic athletes to SMC.
