The Life Sciences Department offers background courses for students interested in careers in biological, medical, environmental, nutrition, and biotechnological sciences. We also offer a number of courses fulfilling general education requirements, as well as provide general interest courses to the community.
SMC's Biological Sciences program is an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary course of study that develops knowledge and understanding of living organisms at the macro and micro levels. The program examines the origins, development, distribution, structures, and functions of living organisms. Coursework is designed to develop your critical thinking skills and provide you with a foundation for future employment in the biological sciences, as well as many other STEM fields.
SMC's Environmental Science program is an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary course of study that presents an overview of ecological issues from a scientific perspective. The program examines the interrelated nature of environmental and social systems. Coursework is designed to equip you with the skills and tools to successfully use the scientific method while studying and solving environmental problems.
SMC's General Science program is an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary course of study that presents an overview of physical and life sciences. The program examines the interrelated nature of the sciences, and the principles of the scientific method. Coursework is designed to develop the research, analytical, and communication skills you need to study and help solve problems from a scientific perspective.
SMC's Nutrition and Dietetics program is an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary course of study that develops knowledge and understanding of the principles of food and nutrition sciences. The program examines human nutritional requirements, chemicals and nutrients in food, and how nutrients function and affect the body and overall health. Coursework is designed to prepare you to understand, develop, and manage effective nutrition programs for individuals and groups in a variety of settings.
