The Mathematics Tutorial Lab provides free services to students in math classes. Tutoring is not available to students in UCLA extension classes or math classes taught at other schools.

Drop-in tutoring is available at all three locations during regular hours of operation. Hour-long tutoring sessions are offered by appointment in MC 84.

Students are encouraged to drop by the lab to study, complete homework assignments, use the tutoring services, visit workshops and study sessions or complete Arranged Hours for Math 50 or 31.

Note: SMC cannot refer to private tutors or tutoring companies.

Required Skills

  • Customer Service Skills: A successful tutor must be able to form relationships with students, discuss their concerns, and help them through the process of finding an answer. This requires patience, kindness, and an energetic, friendly demeanor.

  • Intercultural Communication Skills: SMC's student body is large and diverse. A tutor must be able to work amicably with students of all different types of backgrounds. All are welcome here.

  • Demonstrated Academic Success: A tutor should be an exemplary student. The role of a tutor in the Math Lab is not only to help with questions about math but with developing good study habits, test-taking skills, etc. The skills learned with a tutor should be applicable to any class a student takes.

Potential math tutors must apply via College Central Network.
