Email for Appointments

Your instructor will respond to email within two hours whenever possible, and within 24 hours in all cases.

This class is NOT taught through CANVAS but rather through Connect4Education, an independent distance education company based in Herndon, Virginia. There is no printed textbook for this class since everything is done online at the Connect4Education site.

The course will not show up on your CANVAS so please follow the directions below for purchasing the access code directly from Connect4Education and registering it at their website before the deadline that your professor has set for your particular section. Usually, the access code registration becomes available one week prior to the start date of the class and closes at 9:00pm. PST on the first day of the class.

Note: You must first be officially registered for this course through the SMC Admissions Office and pay all applicable fees.

Get the Correct Access Code

Do not buy used copies of the course access code.

You can purchase the ACCESS CODE for this course that is titled OnMusic Appreciation, the new Fourth Edition at the Front Desk of the SMC Bookstore, at the SMC Performing Arts Campus Bookstore, or order it online directly from Connect4Education in advance of start date of the class. Visit the main Connect4Education (C4E) website. The last option is the best as you will get an access code immediately via email. Please be sure to register your student.smc.edu email address when you register your access code.

You may only use a new, unused ACCESS CODE of the Fourth Edition. You will not be able to order it from other online vendors. Be sure to save the enclosed serial number slip that contains your own unique access code. Each access code is unique and is exclusive to each individual student enrolled in the course. That access code is linked to the Student College ID and records for each semester. Therefore, you will NOT be able to share the access code with another student who is currently in the class. There is no 'paper text' book for this class so please do not try to purchase the textbook and CDs that are used for our Music 32 ground classes. Since Connect4Education no longer automatically includes the course DVD, you may request the DVD by emailing Connect4Education once you have purchased the Access Code.

You also may not be able to access this class from the SMC computers and the campus network as the SMC firewall may prevent files from being streamed from the internet.

Course Description and Goals

Music is art as well as science. To be able to comprehend it to the fullest we must, therefore, be able to appreciate both its emotional and intellectual content.

The aim of this course is very simple: to provide you with the tools for a basic understanding of music. It will not make you a musician or teach you how to write music. It will, however, give you the necessary background to understand what is going on technically when you are listening to music so that your experience is not limited to a wash of sound that produces a certain feeling.

The course will concentrate on a) The development of an attentive style of listening, b) The introduction and systematic study of the building blocks of music, and c) Enhancing awareness of the main musical styles of selected western and non-western cultures.

You will also be required to attend a live orchestra concert during the term and submit a Concert Report as a final term paper.
