Our mission is to give our students the best possible preparation in chemistry and physics, enabling them to transfer seamlessly to four-year institutions. Towards that end, we employ a highly dedicated and knowledgeable faculty supported by excellent technical staff. The departmental facilities are state of the art and include such instrumentation as FT-NMR and FT-IR spectrometers. Join us for what we think is the best Physical Science Department at the best Community College in the country!
In the Chemistry program students study the properties of matter, conduct experiments and make qualitative and quantitative analysis of many substances.
In the Engineering Program, students learn to apply the theories and principles of science and mathematics to research and develop economical solutions to practical technical problems.
SMC's General Science program is an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary course of study that presents an overview of physical and life sciences. The program examines the interrelated nature of the sciences, and the principles of the scientific method. Coursework is designed to develop the research, analytical, and communication skills you need to study and help solve problems from a scientific perspective.
In the Physics Program students study matter, energy, and the relationships between them and devise methods to apply laws and theories of physics to industry, medicine, and other fields.
