Graduation Ceremony Information for Students
Congratulations to the Class of 2017! Join us in celebrating and recognizing your academic achievements. Santa Monica College's Graduation Ceremony is our way of saying Well Done! We are proud of you!
Many members of the SMC family will be in attendance, including the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, hundreds of graduating students, and their guests. Petition to graduate by April 15.
Receive eligibility notice from the Admissions and Records office.
Receive and RSVP to the email invitation to the Graduation Ceremony sent by the Admissions and Records office.
Before Graduation Day—Purchase Graduation Supplies
Do not wait until the day of the event to get your cap and gown. We will run out!
Caps, gowns, and honor sashes will be on sale in the Bookstor beginning May 1.
The price for a cap and gown is $40 plus tax ($43.70 total). Prices subject to change.
Graduates designated as honor students may purchase the honor sashes with the appropriate documentation for $35.99 plus tax ($39.32 total). Prices are subject to change.
Announcements and assorted gifts for the graduate are now available at the Bookstore. For more details about the bookstore's hours and location, visit the SMC Bookstore.
The SMC Bookstore will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the day of graduation.
Before Graduation Day—Request for Disability Accommodations
Students and guests in need of accommodations, please contact SMC Disabled Student Programs and Services (DSPS) at (310) 434-4265 or Video Phone (310) 238-1642 a week prior to the commencement ceremony. Seating for guests with a disability (and one guest) is available on a first come, first serve basis. Wheelchair accommodations are available directly in front of the grandstand. Disabled guests should enter through Gates1 or 5 on the Map: Graduation Ceremony Map.
Graduation Day Events
When: Tuesday, June 13, 2017. Students must arrive by 4 p.m. sharp.
Where: SMC Pavilion (behind the Library) to line up for the ceremony, which will take place in the Corsair Field (football stadium).

Check all personal belongings (coats, purses, etc.) in the secured coat check in the Pavilion.
Graduates MUST bring their cap and gown to the graduation ceremony. These are required to participate.
The processional (entrance march for all graduates) will begin promptly at 6 p.m. The ceremony will last approximately 2 ½ hours.
The graduation ceremony will be broadcast live via the Internet (link will be available here the day of the ceremony) for all your family and friends to enjoy if they can't be there in person! For more details, visit Alumni Association.
Graduation Ceremony Code of Conduct
Follow all directions given by graduation marshals.
Do not bring any illegal substances or alcoholic beverages with you to the event.
Coolers, bottles, and alcoholic beverages are not permitted at the ceremony.
Graduation Ceremony Logistics
Parking and Directions: Parking is free at the Santa Monica College Main Campus on Graduation Day. The stadium is located on the southwest side of the campus along 16th Street between Pearl Street and Pico Boulevard. Directions to our campus and a campus map.
Restrooms: Restrooms are located at the stadium on the ground level underneath the guest seating.
Feel free to invite your family and friends to the Commencement Ceremony.
Admission is free. No tickets are required.
The entrance gates to Corsair Field will open at 4 p.m.
Encourage guests to arrive early to guarantee seating and to dress appropriately for the weather.
Disability Accommodations: Seating for individuals with a disability (and one guest) is available on a first come, first serve basis. Disabled seating is limited. The bleachers at the stadium are not wheelchair accessible. Wheelchair accommodations are available directly in front of the grandstand. Graduation Ceremony Details—What Happens?

The processional, entrance march for all graduates, accompanied by faculty and staff in academic regalia begin promptly at 6 p.m.
After all of the graduates, faculty, and dignitaries are seated, the Superintendent/President and others will speak to the graduating class.
When instructed, each student will proceed to the stage where their name will be read and a picture will be taken by a professional photographer as they receive their degree from a member of the Board of Trustees and Senior Staff.
After all the names of the graduates have been read, there will be a recessional.
Recognition of Honor Students
Honors students are indicated in the graduation program and by a colored sash worn over commencement robes.
Highest Honors: 4.0 GPA, gold sash.
High Honors: 3.70- 3.99 GPA, silver sash.
Honors: 3.0-3.69 GPA, light blue sash.
Graduation honors are awarded to students who have met all the graduation requirements, who have never been suspended from Santa Monica College, who are not currently on academic or progress probation, and who meet the following GPA guidelines for all degree applicable coursework from SMC and other colleges.
Participation in these organizations will not be indicated on your diploma, nor in the graduation program.
Your organization may provide special insignia for you to wear with your cap and gown.
Graduates participating in the ceremony will receive a congratulatory certificate in a SMC diploma case.
Actual diplomas are mailed to graduates as soon as they are available, usually within four months of the ceremony.
Diploma covers are free to those graduates participating in the Graduation Ceremony. If you do not participate in the ceremony, you will not be able to retrieve a diploma cover.
