Out of Area California Students

Thank you for your interest in Santa Monica College. As an out-of-area California student we realize it may be difficult for you to come to SMC in person to complete the assessment process as a new student. To this end, we will gladly make every attempt possible to help complete the SMC English (or ESL) and mathematics assessment tests at a testing location close to you. Alternatively, you may arrange for these services on your own, however, you must follow our procedures for using Other College Placement Results (under the "Waivers Based on Assessment/Placement Results" section) to ensure that we will accept your results.

Need to take both English AND Math Assessments?

Given the difficulty in finding a college testing center that administers both the ACCUPLACER English/ESL and the COMPASS Math test, SMC will accept the COMPASS Writing and Reading Skills tests in lieu of the ACCUPLACER test. We will not, however, accept the ACCUPLACER math tests under any circumstances. All tests must be administered by an authorized proctor.

Authorized Proctors & Proctoring Fees

All proctors must be approved by the SMC Assessment Center. We will only consider as "authorized proctors" individuals who are regularly employed at a testing center or assessment center at a college or university, at a military facility, or an ACT Testing Center. Relatives, no matter their position, may not serve as a proctor. Note that some centers will charge a fee to proctor exams. Sometimes they will have a per test fee, or an hourly rate fee. In our experience, fees tend to range from $20-$45 total. These fees are your responsibility and SMC will not reimburse you nor directly pay proctoring fees.

Request Your Test Today!

Only students living outside the greater Los Angeles area (e.g., north of Santa Barbara, San Diego, San Bernardino, Riverside counties) may request the opportunity to test at a remote location following the steps below. Students living in the greater Los Angeles area will not qualify and must come to SMC to take the placement tests in person. Please read the sections below and follow the instructions provided to request the tests you need.

Request for Remote COMPASS® Testing for Math & English

Students unable to take the COMPASS Math placement test at SMC may arrange for supervised remote testing by following the steps listed below. Fees for remote testing (if any) are the student’s responsibility.

  1. Locate a testing site by clicking on this link: COMPASS Internet Remote Testing Site
    - Once at the site, input your zip code in the Location box, and click the "Search" button.
    - Identify the location most convenient to you. Not all locations listed will be available for proctoring. Unfortunately, this is not known until SMC attempts to sign you up.
    - Copy the Test Center Information, including the name of the facility.
    - If you do not find a location close to you, you may contact ACT Compass Customer Support at 1-800-645-1992 (Option #4). They may be able to identify a location not listed online. If you do find this, be sure to go to Step 2 below and request the remote test from us.

Read carefully: WE WILL NOT ISSUE ANOTHER REGISTRATION NUMBER IF YOU DO NOT TAKE THE TEST WITHIN THE ALLOTED TIME OR IF YOU SCHEDULE AND THEN CANCEL YOUR TESTING APPOINTMENT. YOU WILL SIMPLY NEED TO WAIT UNTIL YOU COME TO SMC IN PERSON TO TAKE THE TEST--NO MATTER WHERE YOU CURRENTLY RESIDE. Then...
