The Assessment Center/Counseling can only process waiver requests for the following classes:

  • English, ESL, and Math
  • Anatomy 1
  • Biology 21
  • Chemistry 11

General Instructions to Obtain a Prerequisite Waiver

Placement and prerequisite waivers may be granted under the specific circumstances noted below. Please read the appropriate section to determine if your request will qualify.

Be sure to follow the procedure outlined; failure to do so will likely result in denial of the waiver.       Note: you will not be notified if you provide incomplete information.

Waiver Processing Time

Once submitted, your waiver will be evaluated within 5-7 business days. You will receive an email to your SMC student email account regarding its outcome. Waivers based on AP results or college transcripts can be evaluated by a counselor at the Transfer/Counseling Center. 

Waivers for Other Chemistry, Physics & Biological Science

The Assessment Center is NOT able to process these requests however directions for waiver requests are included below.

  • Biology 22, 23, Microbiology 1, Nursing 17, Physiology 3, course prerequisite waivers can only be granted by the Life Sciences Department (a course syllabus may be required).

  • Chemistry 12, 21, 22, 24 and Physics 7, 9, 22, 23, 24-course prerequisite waivers can only be granted by the Physical Sciences Department (a course syllabus may be required).

Send waiver requests to ScienceWaivers@smc.edu. Be sure to include scanned transcripts, web links to official course descriptions or course outlines, scanned syllabi (optional but recommended), and anything else you think would assist in verifying your waiver. Make sure to clearly state your waiver request, and include your complete name and SMC student ID#.

In-Person Requests for English, ESL, Math, Chemistry 11, Anatomy 1, Biology 21

  • Go to the Transfer/Counseling Center.
  • Bring a copy of your college transcript, course descriptions (a syllabus may be required). All prerequisite courses must have been completed with a "C" or better. If based on AP, submit your official AP Test Score Report. We are not able to accept third party results (e.g., High School reports).
  • A counselor will evaluate your request and issue a prerequisite waiver if appropriate.

Waivers Based on Assessment/Placement Results

Santa Monica College only accepts specific Accuplacer and COMPASS raw scores (see below). We will only accept official raw scores sent directly from the accredited college institution.

Faxed results must include testing center contact information--in case we have questions. SMC will determine your placement level, based on our current evaluation process.

Approved placement tests:

English: Classic ACCUPLACER Reading Comprehension & Sentence Skills or COMPASS/eCOMPASS Reading and Writing Skills.

ESL: ACCUPLACER Reading Skills, Sentence Meaning, Language Use.

Math: Classic ACCUPLACER Math (Arithmetic, Elementary Algebra, College Level Math) or COMPASS Math. 

Chemistry 11: SMC's California Chemistry Diagnostic Test.

    Please note: Colleges are not required to honor your request for faxing. SMC is not responsible should this occur.

  • Once submitted, your waiver will be evaluated within 5-7 business days. You will receive an email to your SMC student email account regarding its outcome. You may review your waiver by checking Corsair Connect (Enroll --> Student Records --> Placement History).


Waivers based on Completed College-Level Coursework or Advanced Placement Exam Results

You can submit an unofficial college transcript for evaluation. A course description and/or syllabus may be required. All prerequisite courses must have been completed with a "C" or better. If submitting your Advanced Placement(AP) score report for evaluation, you must submit an official College Board AP test score report. We are not able to accept third-party results (e.g., high school reports/transcript).

When are official transcripts/records needed?

If you are using college transcripts and/or Advanced Placement results to graduate SMC or fulfill transfer requirements, you must submit an official college transcript(s) or AP results. These documents must be sent directly from the Institution and/or College Board to SMC Admissions.

It is very important to have your transcripts and/or AP scores evaluated by a Santa Monica College counselor. 

AP credit can be used in the following ways:

  • A score of 3, 4, or 5 on the AP English Language & Composition or Composition & Literature exam will qualify you for English 2; 
  • A score of 3 on the AP Calculus AB exam will qualify you for Math 7;
  • A score of 3 on the AP Calculus BC exam will qualify you for Math 8;
  • A score of 4 or 5 on the AP Calculus AB exam will qualify you for Math 8;
  • A score of 4 or 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam will qualify you for Math 10, 11, 13, and 15;
  • A score of 3, 4, or 5 on the AP Chemistry exam will qualify a student for Chemistry 11. 

Requests By Fax

  • Be sure to include ALL information requested. Only completed forms with appropriate documentation will be considered. All others will be disregarded.
  • Once submitted, your waiver will be evaluated within 5-7 business days. You will receive an email to your SMC student email account regarding its outcome. You may review your waiver by checking Corsair Connect (Enroll --> Student Records --> Placement History).

Waivers based on CAASPP, CSU and/or EAP Test Results

How can I use CAASPP, CSU or EAP test to clear a prerequisite?

Official scores for CAASPP, CSU and/or EAP must be no older than 1 year to be considered. We are not able to accept third- party results (e.g., high school reports).

CAASPP, CSU or EAP credit can be used in the following ways:

SMC English 1 Placement

  • A score of "Standard Exceeded" on the CAASPP; or "Exempt" or "Ready for college-level English courses" received on the Early Assessment Program (EAP); or A score of "Standard Exceeded" on the CAASPP; or "Exempt" or "Ready for college-level English courses" received on the Early Assessment Program (EAP); or
  • A score of 147 or higher received on the CSU (EPT) English Test.

SMC English 1 with English 28 Placement:

If you are trying to place into a higher-level English course, you must take the SMC assessment test.

  • A score of "Standard Met" on the CAASPP; or "Ready for college-level English courses-Conditional" received on the Early Assessment Program (EAP); or
  • A score of 125-146 received on the CSU (EPT) English Test.

SMC Math 21/26/41/54 Placement:

If you are trying to place into a higher-level Math course, you must take the SMC placement test.

  • A score of "Standard Exceeded" on the CAASPP; or "Exempt" or "Ready for College-Level Mathematics Courses" received on the Early Assessment Program (EAP); or
  • A score of 50 or higher received on the CSU Entry Level Math (ELM) test.

You will be required to take the SMC assessment test if you received a score lower than 50 on the ELM or "Conditional" on the EAP for math.

  • Complete the following form and fax it 310-434-8019, or drop it off at the Assessment Center (Liberal Arts Building, Room 109). Please be sure to include a copy of your CSU or EAP test results.
  • Once submitted, your waiver will be evaluated within 5-7 business days. You will receive an email to your SMC student email account regarding its outcome. You may review your waiver by checking Corsair Connect (Enroll --> Student Records --> Placement History).
