Processing Waivers Time
Due to high volume of waivers submitted to the Assessment Center, it is very likely that your request could take up to 7 business days to be processed. You may go to the Transfer/Counseling Center to request your waiver in person-for English, ESL, Math, Anatomy 1, Biology 21 and Chemistry 11.

Waivers Based on Assessment/Placement Results
Request by Fax Only
Santa Monica College only accepts Accuplacer and COMPASS raw scores for placement. See accepted placement tests below. If you live in the greater Los Angeles/Ventura area, you must come to SMC to take your assessment. Only students living outside the greater Los Angeles area (north of Santa Barbara, San Diego, San Bernardino and Riverside counties) can request a test at a Remote Location. Results can be faxed directly to us or sent via US mail.
For English: ACCUPLACER Reading Comprehension & Sentence Skills or COMPASS/eCOMPASS Reading and Writing Skills.
For ESL: ACCUPLACER Reading Skills, Sentence Meaning, Language Use.
For Math: ACCUPLACER Math or COMPASS Math.
For Chemistry 11: California Chemistry Diagnostic Test
Please note that not every college will want to honor your request for faxing. SMC is not responsible should this occur.
Test results will be evaluated on a first-come, first-serve basis and input into our enrollment system only when they can be matched to a student record.
Please instruct the college where you completed the test to include your Santa Monica College identification number on your test results.
Faxed results must include the contact information for that college testing center—just in case we have any questions.
Once results are processed, you may review your Placement History report through Corsair Connect. You may also review this by checking Corsair Connect (Enroll --> Student Records --> Placement History).
Waivers based on Completed College-Level Coursework or Advanced Placement Exam Results
College Board Advanced Placement test results may be used to determine your eligibility for English, math, and chemistry courses. You must bring your original AP test results to the Assessment Center, the Counseling Department, or the Welcome Center. Alternatively, you may fax your request for a waiver based on AP scores by completing the appropriate prerequisite waiver form: English/ESL/Math OR Chemistry & Life Sciences form:
Placement/prerequisite waivers will be issued according to the following:
A score of 3, 4, or 5 on the AP English Language & Composition or Composition & Literature exam will qualify you for English 2 and give 3 units of credit for English 1;
A score of 3 on the AP Calculus AB exam will qualify you for Math 7 and give 5 units credit for Math 2;
A score of 3 on the AP Calculus BC exam will qualify you for Math 8 and give 5 units credit for Math 7;
A score of 4 or 5 on the AP Calculus AB exam will qualify you for Math 8 and give 5 units credit for Math 7;
A score of 4 or 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam will qualify you for Math 10, 11, 13, and 15 and give 5 units credit for Math 8.
A score of 3, 4, or 5 on the AP Chemistry exam will qualify a student for Chemistry 11 and give 5 units of credit for Chemistry 10.
Note: You must request your official AP report to be sent directly from The College Board to the SMC Admissions Office.
It is important to have your Advanced Placement scores evaluated by a Santa Monica College counselor. The evaluation will determine if the scores are transferable, but more importantly, it will be determined if they satisfy a requirement relevant to you. This evaluation can take up to 7 business days. To avoid taking classes you don’t need, get this evaluation process started immediately with a counselor.”
