The University of Newcastle combines a country setting with the advantages of city living. Situated on a breathtaking stretch of Australia's coastline north of Sydney, the port city of Newcastle boasts wonderful beaches, low cost of living, a favorable climate, and casual lifestyle. Established in 1965, the university has two campuses, Callaghan (the largest campus) in Newcastle, and Central Coast Campus at Ourimbah (between Newcastle and Sydney). Today more than 19,000 students can choose from undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered by eleven faculties. Both campuses have facilities to match their setting: well stocked libraries, student clubs, shops, cafes, sports facilities, modern lecture halls, and laboratories.

Academic Program Highlights

A semester at the University of Newcastle runs over fourteen teaching weeks. A ten-credit point subject normally comprises four contact hours a week, although courses requiring laboratory work often involve additional class time. Study Abroad students must enroll for a minimum of thirty credit points and a maximum of forty credit points. This typically translates into twelve to sixteen credits. Major areas of study include Architecture, Building and Design, Arts, Social Sciences, Economics and Commerce, Education, Engineering, Law, Medicine and Health Sciences, Music, Nursing, and Science and Mathematics. Interested students should have at least sophomore standing and a GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale or higher.

Student Life

Newcastle offers many usual city advantages, such as restaurants, cafes, parks and gardens, theaters, art galleries, shopping centers, and nightclubs. Less than one hour's drive to the north is the impressive harbor of Port Stephens, a popular center for big game fishing, sailing, surfing, and sail boarding. The University of Newcastle at Callaghan boasts one of the best campuses in Australia. Its three hundred acres of natural brush land, complete with Australian wildlife, at the city's edge offers peace and quiet; the perfect prerequisite for successful study. Central to student life on campus is the University Union, which boasts more than 20,000 members. The Union organizes many of the University's important social and cultural events. The Callaghan campus offers single-room accommodation in three residence halls. In addition, the University manages an off-campus property called Univille. Housing arrangements can also be made through the University's Accommodation Service for those who wish to live independently in the community.

Bond University

Program Site

Bond University is Australia's first and largest private university, offering personalized education by highly qualified staff, innovative courses and teaching methods, an international student body, and a beautiful campus. The University is located on the Gold Coast of Queensland, which is world renowned for its magnificent beaches, parks, rainforests, and mountain ranges. The University was established in 1987 as the first private institution in Australia, and is accredited through the Australian Vice-ChancellorÕs Committee. Bond has since proven itself to be a dynamic institution with the highest percentage of Ph.D. qualified faculty of any Australian university. Today, Bond has an enrollment of approximately 1,800 students, of which nearly twenty-five percent are international.

Academic Program Highlights

Bond University divides its schedule into trimesters. International students are required to take a minimum load equivalent to three subjects per trimester, although students may elect to study more subjects. This translates into twelve to sixteen credits per trimester. Subject areas include Asian Studies, Australian Studies, Communications, English, European Studies, Journalism, Philosophy, Psychology, Accounting, Economics, Finance, Business Management, Law, Computer Science, and Information Systems. Interested students should have at least sophomore standing and a GPA of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale or higher.

Student Life

Bond University is located on the Gold Coast of Australia, approximately one-hour southeast of Brisbane. With its famous surf beaches and many other scenic attractions, the Gold Coast is a popular and safe destination. The Gold Coast offers easy access to natural attractions such as the Great Barrier Reef and larger rainforest areas of the north. In addition, the Gold Coast provides a wide range of restaurants, coffee shops, shopping centers, and entertainment and sporting facilities. Public transportation is easily accessible. Bond University boasts AustraliaÕs most modern, purpose-built campus complete with a medical center, lecture halls, computer labs, and several libraries. All students have access to the Internet and email. The University also has a superb sports center featuring basketball, badminton, and volleyball courts in a fully equipped gymnasium. Students may choose from three types of accommodation: on-campus, off-campus, or home-stay. Meals are provided in on-campus housing.

Macquarie University

Program Site

Macquarie University, known as Australiais innovative university, began in Sydney in 1967. Today, the University is a multifaceted institution situated in the heart of one of Australia’s leading high technology parks. The 125-hectare campus is located 18 kilometers northwest of Sydney’s central business district and enjoys a magnificent natural brush land setting. A modern shopping complex is located adjacent to the campus and there is regular bus service into downtown Sydney. The Macquarie University Library has a collection of over one million books and periodicals and provides seating for 1,850 readers. The library offers free and open access to the books and periodicals collections as well as lending privileges and reference services to all students. International students play an important role in the life of the University, with over 3,200 international students currently studying on campus within a total student population of 21,000.

The program at Macquarie University offers a wide variety of courses including Australian and Aboriginal Studies, Anthropology, History, Politics, Psychology, Business, Computing, Education, Languages, Biology, Environmental Studies, Literature, Communications, and Sociology. Interested students should have at least sophomore standing and a GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale or higher.

Student Life

Macquarie University life is more than study, and in addition to its excellent teaching facilities, it offers an abundance of social and sporting opportunities. The active Sports Association has more than thirty clubs for everything from athletics to water sports. There are squash, netball, tennis, and badminton courts available. In addition, there is a gym and weight-training area, a sauna, a brush track, and four sports fields. The Students’ Union organizes many activities on campus, including rock bands, Market Days, and regular arts and crafts activities. Students at Macquarie University are housed in various accommodation options on and around campus, including seventy-five new five-bedroom townhouses, which are self-catered. There are also independent apartments close to campus. The Accommodation Office assists students in finding temporary and permanent housing.
