Program Site
Nanjing University is located in Nanjing, a former Chinese capital and a city rich in history. Nanjing is situated in a densely populated region which has long been the "breadbasket" of China. The region contains many cities of historical and cultural importance, such as Wuxi, Suzhou, Hangzhou, and Yangzhou, which are easily explored in one- or two-day trips from Nanjing. Known as "Nanda," Nanjing University is ranked as one of the best comprehensive universities in China with a student body of over 10,000 Chinese students. Since 1980, several thousand foreign students have been welcomed to the University. Typically, over 200 foreign students from around the world live and work with their fellow Chinese students on this residential campus in the tree-lined heart of Nanjing.
Academic Program Highlights
The program at Nanjing University offers students a chance to explore China and take language and culture courses at an introductory level. All students take courses in Chinese language and Culture and choose from three other courses on China which are taught in English by bilingual Nanjing University faculty members. Students may take Beginning Mandarin or, after appropriate placement testing, intermediate or advanced level Chinese language courses. Lecture courses include: Geography of China, Survey of China's History, Survey of Chinese Literature, and Chinese Culture and Society. The program includes an experiential co-curriculum designed to facilitate language acquisition and expand knowledge of Chinese culture through faculty-led field trips to important historical sites as well as to temples, museums, schools, gardens, and a mosque. A one-week field trip to the capital, Beijing, to visit its many historical sites is featured every semester. As part of the orientation program, students match up with Orientation Hosts, English-speaking Nanda students who act as "cultural interpreters" for American students while they improve their English skills. Through this exchange, students are introduced to Nanda, student life there, and activities both on and off campus. This program is open to students at sophomore or higher standing with a GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
Student Life
Students live in a modern 20-floor high-rise building operated by the Nanda Institute for International Students. Students live together in dormitory-style rooms for two with other international students from all over the world. The dorm has hot water bathrooms, cooking facilities, and laundry services. Located just off the main Nanda campus, the dormitory also has a foreign student/teacher cafeteria, a library, reading rooms, a Xerox and typing room, a weight training and ping pong room, and a small convenience shop, E-mail and bar. Program Site
As one of the seven ancient capitals of China, Beijing is the cultural, political and economic center of the country. The Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace, just to name a few, reflect its rich cultural history. The rapid social and economic development in the city makes it attractive to visitors and businesses from around the world. As the host of the Olympic Games of 2008, Beijing is changing with each passing day; new construction and renovation projects are underway throughout the city.
Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) has approximately 4,000 students and is a modern, progressive university located in the northwest section of the city. The university is located in the Haidian District of Beijing where most key institutions of higher learning are situated. With the Third Ring Road adjacent to the University, transportation is very easy and convenient to other parts of the city. The University is modern and attractive, and of moderate size. There are two campuses (Campus East and Campus West) that flank the Third Ring Road. An underpass allows students to easily get from one campus to the other. There are two libraries with a collection of l million books, several classroom buildings, residence halls, two dining halls, one campus hospital, and three internet cafes. Known for its foreign language teaching, BFSU takes pride in the fact that it has graduated a large number of Chinese foreign ambassadors. In addition to teaching more than 30 foreign languages, BFSU offers an extensive list of intensive language courses in Mandarin at all levels of ability. Business courses are offered in English in the School of International Business.
Academic Program Highlights
Highly qualified language professors will provide coursework in intensive Chinese at all levels of ability (beginning, intermediate, and advanced). No prior Chinese language study is required. A placement test will be given to students upon arrival at BFSU to determine the appropriate level of study. When enrolling in the intensive language program, student may expect to be in class 18 hours per week. Modern language laboratories are available for speaking and listening practice.
The School of International Business offers upper level Business classes in English that enroll both international and Chinese students.
Student Life
BFSU has two main residence halls for its international student body: the Guojiao Building and the White Building. A total of 900 beds are available with prices from $9 per day to $30 per day depending on the amenities chosen (single or shared room, private bath, suite with living room and private bath). The residence halls are conveniently located to classrooms on campus and no classroom building is more than a 10-15 minute walk. All residence hall rooms for international students are air-conditioned and internet access is available through the phone line in the room (a telephone card must be purchased). Meals may be prepared in the shared kitchen on each residence hall floor or may be purchased in the cafeteria for a reasonable price. There is no “meal plan” available and, instead, meals are purchased individually. A small grocery store is located in the lobby of the residence hall; a supermarket is just a bus ride away from campus. The campus offers a variety of dining halls and small restaurants, outdoor track and weight machines, and outdoor table tennis. A small gymnasium is located inside the Guojiao Residence Hall Building. Washing machines are also available for use for a fee.
