Academic and Personal Counseling
The International Education Counselors provide academic and personal counseling for international students on an F-1 visa. Counselors are available year-round to assist students with schedule planning whether it be for an Associate degree at SMC or transfer to a four-year university.
Walk-in counseling is available year-round and appointments are available during non-enrollment periods. Students may also meet with counselors regarding personal issues and challenges that may be interfering with their progress in class.
How to Meet with a Counselor
New students who have attended their new student Seminar will have the option of meeting with a counselor in Group Lab following the seminar. During this optional Group Lab session, counselors will assist new students in planning and enrolling into their classes for the first semester. Students may return thereafter to meet with a counselor in the International Education Center on a walk-in basis.
Walk-in counseling is available year-round for continuing students and is limited to 10-15 minutes. For more in-depth counseling, including educational planning and transcript evaluations, students must schedule an appointment during non-enrollment periods.
Best Times to Meet with a Counselor
Although walk-in counseling is available year-round, the office experiences long wait times during peak enrollment and transfer application periods. Long-term educational planning and transcript evaluation questions should be avoided during peak times.
On-line Counseling (www.smc.edu/askiecc)
Access to an on-line counselor is available to students who are unable to come into the office during regular business hours. On-line counselors are only able to answer basic counseling related questions. Students can generally expect to receive responses within 2-5 business days.
For more in-depth questions, students must come in and meet with a counselor in person for best results.
