Health Care and Insurance

Medical care in the United States is very expensive. International students attending SMC are therefore mandated to purchase a comprehensive medical insurance policy through SMC. This policy is underwritten by National Union Fire Insurance Company of Pittsburgh, Pa., and is paid for by each student at the time of enrollment. Under this policy, each student must first visit SMC’s Health Center to receive a referral for further treatment.
The following is a comprehensive synopsis of the policy presently in effect:

Introduction
This is only a brief description of the coverage. Details are in the policy. A copy of the insurance policy may be reviewed at the International Education Counseling Center (IECC). Any discrepancy between this description and the policy will be governed by the policy. This description outlines the basic details of your insurance coverage which has been selected by SMC. You will also receive a student medical insurance identification card, which is for your use only. Never lend this card to other students.
Note: If you have been injured or need any medical services, you must use the approved Health Center before incurring off-campus medical expenses that may not be reimbursable. If the Health Center is closed, contact the insurance company directly for a referral at: 1-800-537-1777 or www.4studenthealth.com.
