International Education Week

November 12-16, 2012

Join Santa Monica College as we celebrate the 12th annual International Education Week.  IEW is a time to celebrate our diverse campus community which includes more than 3,200 international students from more than 100 nations around the world, lectures, performances, field trips, social events, and curriculum that promotes Global Citizenship among students, faculty, staff and the campus community.  Come explore and experience some of the many facets of our different cultures!   

We encourage your participation in the many events offered during this special week, including engaging lectures with GE Anderson and Christine Choy, and food, music and dance on the Campus Quad during Global Citizenship Day.

"CLAC-ing Across the Curriculum: Lessons Learned"

Dr. Judy Krutky, a visiting professor of political science at the Rand Corp. in Santa Monica, will talk about ways to integrate culture and language into many disciplines.  Krutky is a professor of political science and international studies at Baldwin Wallace University in Berea Ohio.
 
GE Anderson – Designated Drivers: State Capitalism in China’s Auto Industry

Author, consultant, and former international finance executive – whose research focuses on business- government relations in Asia, state-owned enterprises, and China’s auto industry – has taught at the University of Chengdu, and provides advice in political risk mitigation, business-government relations, and business strategy through his consulting practice.  Pacific Rim Advisors, to firms ranging from Silicon Valley startups to Fortune 500 multinationals with operations in East Asia. 
 
Global Citizenship Day Festival

Take your taste buds traveling as SMC celebrates Global Citizenship Day.  There will be a festival featuring a kaleidoscope of free food, music, international dances performed by SMC Global Motion, and games.  Also, find out about how campus departments are engaged in the Global Citizenship initiative.  
 
An Evening with Oscar-Nominated Filmmaker Christine Choy

Santa Monica College’s Department of Communication/Film Studies, Global Citizenship, and the International Education Center are proud to invite you to the closing event of SMC’s 2012 International Education Week: An evening with Oscar-nominated director/producer/cinematographer Christine Choy, a true global citizen and one of the most fascinating documentary filmmakers of our time.  SMC Professor Salvador Carrasco will lead the conversation with Ms. Choy (his former professor at NYU) and screen excerpts from her impressive filmography, which spans all continents and raises all kinds of thought-provoking global issues.  Christine Choy is a film professor at New York University, a prominent role model in the Asian American film community, and a Guggenheim, Rockefeller, and Fulbright Fellowship recipient.
