James Martin, SMC Music Professor, began his musical career as a flutist, receiving his MM in Music Theory and Flute from Indiana University before continuing his studies at Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music for a DMA in Orchestral Conducting. A highlight of his conducting career was the 400-performance national tour of Camelot, starring Richard Burton, Richard Harris and Christine Ebersole. His flute playing led him to work with the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra, Los Angeles Concert Opera, Dance Theater Harlem, and Joffrey Ballet. Martin is a five-time recipient of “Who’s Who Among American Teachers,” recipient of the Ilona Katz Chair of Excellence, and former Music Department Chair. He began his tenure at Santa Monica College in 1984, full time in 2000. He is currently the conductor of the SMC Symphony, where he annually leads symphonic, opera and ballet programs.
