Janet Harclerode (MATESL, University of California, Los Angeles and BA, MAT, University of Pittsburgh) is Chair of the ESL Department at Santa Monica College, where she teaches English as a second language and introductory linguistics. She has taught English and ESL to secondary, college, and university students in urban schools in Pittsburgh and Southern California and EFL in Shanghai, China. Professor Harclerode works on curriculum and teaching materials for ESL at SMC and is currently collaborating with colleagues from across the state in the development of an ESL placement exam for the California Community College System. Her academic interests include language policy and language change, language use in the classroom, and language and social power.
