Welcome to Study Abroad!

Santa Monica College is committed to promoting global citizenship.  To support that goal, SMC offers several Study Abroad opportunities led by SMC faculty members, tailored to make the most of the destination’s resources, and give students the opportunity to live and learn about a different culture and its people while participating in service learning projects and earning academic credit for selected courses.  Successful completion of the program
and both courses offered satisfies the Global Citizenship A.A. Degree requirements.

Latin America

SMC’s Latin American Education Program is back! As part of a College-wide initiative to encourage students to develop a broader and more global perspective, we would like to introduce students to the rich history and cultural diversity of Latin America.

Featuring a multidisciplinary approach, the Latin American Education Program was developed by SMC Earth Science Professor Brandon Lewis, who brings a passion for Central and South America from his archaeological research in Belize, Guatemala, and Ecuador.  This program strives to provide an intensive experience for students, encouraging them to better understand the people of cultures of Central America.

Spend three weeks in Belize and Guatemala exploring ancient Maya ruins, living among one of the most ethnically and culturally diversified regions of the world, and working together with national museums and environmental preserves. Your learning adventure will take you to the lush river valley of central Belize, the jungles of Guatemala, and the second largest barrier reef in the world! You will also enjoy excursions to archeological sites such as Tikal, Cahal Pech, Xunantunich, and the amazing Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave!  In addition, a key element that distinguishes the Latin American Education Program is its emphasis on Community and Service Learning and you will have the opportunity to work closely with local children and the elderly as part of our public outreach efforts.
