Eligibility for Student Employment

Federal Work Study (FWS) Job Opportunities

FWS is only available to students who have applied for and received a Financial Aid Award Letter with a Federal Work Study allotment.

If you are an F-1 Visa student, you may not apply for FWS positions. FWS students are paid 100% through their Financial Aid Award. F-1 Visa students cannot apply for FWS positions.

Student Help Job Opportunities

All SMC students can apply for Student Help jobs as long as they are enrolled in at least 12 Units.
F-1 Visa students can ONLY apply for “Student Help” positions. Many of these positions require that you already have a Social Security Card. For more information regarding attaining a Social Security Card, visit the International Student Center located in Counseling Village near Pearl Street). If it is not already stated in the job advertisement, ask the interviewer if they will sponsor you for a Social Security Card if hired.

Pay as a Student Worker

All on-campus positions pay $10 per hour. Students may work up to 20 hours per week during the Fall and Spring semesters if the department you are working in has "Student Help" District Funds. If the department that you are working for has Student Help funds, you may be able to work during the Summer and/or Winter. You will need to discuss this with your supervisor.

If you are a "Federal Work Study" student, we recommend that you work no more than 10 hours per week in order to not exhaust your Work Study Award before the semester ends.

Job Description: Assist Occupational Therapy instructor during physical exercise classes designed for individuals who have had strokes or brain injuries. Some bending and limited lifting required.

Requirements: Ability to follow directions, lift, bend and have patience in communicating with students who have a stroke or injury. Communicate effectively with students who have disabilities.

Bike Club Coordinator

Job Description: Do you envision a different future for Los Angeles? One where cycling is seen as equally viable as cars? Join the SMC Bike Club team to help make it a reality. We coordinate the development and implementation of SMC’s bike campaign by actively empowering, educating, and encouraging the SMC community to ride safely, and confidently, as both a form of transportation and recreation. You will work with students, staff and the local cycling community through educational events, bike repair and group rides. An understanding of urban cycling issues, an outgoing personality and bike mechanic skills are all pluses.

Requirements: Federal Work Study requirements apply. An interest or background in urban cycling issues is required. Professional conduct is essential for working with diverse stakeholders. Strong communication, organization, and computer skills are necessary.

Copywriter

Job Description: Student will write game day previews and recaps after games or matches for various fall semester sports at SMC. Will also conduct interviews with coaches, and athletes for newsletters and for the athletic department website. Student may also write press releases as well. Previous sports or newspaper writing experience is a plus. Applicant must be prepared to provide samples of previous work at the interview. Students must have strong communication skills and be available to work nights and weekends.
