Student Newspaper The Corsair Wins State & Regional Awards

Corsair coverSanta Monica College's student newspaper, The Corsair, recently won seven awards, including two first place awards, in the annual California College Media Association (CCMA) competition. 
 
The Corsair also earned four top spots in the regional Mark of Excellence competition held by the Society for Professional Journalists. The specific awards will be announced at the regional conference to be held March 28 at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu.
 
In the CCMA contest, the Corsair was competing against all weekly college newspapers from around the state, including those from two- and four-year institutions. The awards were announced March 1 at banquet held at the Catamaran Resort in San Diego.
 
Corsair staff photographer Jose Lopez won first place in the sports photo competition for his shot from a Corsair football game involving a player who had lost his helmet. Five Corsair staff photographers earned first place for Best Photo Series for a collection of photos from the campus shooting in June. The photographers are Jose Lopez, Rachel Porter, Amy Gaskin, Paul Alvarez, Jr., and David Hawkins.
 
The Corsair also earned second place for General Newspaper Excellence.
 
The Corsair staff produces a weekly newspaper in the spring and fall semesters and also maintains an online news site, thecorsaironline.com. The Corsair is advised by faculty members Saul Rubin and Gerard Burkhart.
