SANTA MONICA, CA—Santa Monica College is pleased to announce that its student newspaper The Corsair has won two national Pinnacle Awards – first place for Best Sports Feature Photo and second place for Website of the Year – in a nationwide competition organized by the College Media Association (CMA). SMC students competed against their counterparts from more than 340 colleges and universities, including UCLA, University of Miami, and Loyola Marymount University (LMU). The awards were announced during the national CMA convention – the largest gathering of college journalists and advisers in the world – in Dallas, Texas, on October 27.

The Corsair also won 14 awards in the Journalism Association of Community Colleges’ 2017 state publication awards, including General Excellence – Print Edition, first place for News Photo, and first place for Photo Story-Essay. The awards were announced October 14 during the JACC’s Southern California convention, where SMC student journalism students also won 3 awards during onsite competitions.

“It’s always exciting to see the hard work of The Corsair staff recognized both nationally and across the state of California,” said Professor Ashanti Blaize-Hopkins, faculty advisor for The Corsair newspaper. “The awards are a testament to both the strength of SMC’s journalism program and the dedication of the student journalists who chase down stories that matter to the SMC community each day.”

The Corsair was also a 2017 nominee for the Associated Collegiate Press’ Pacemaker Award, highly regarded as the Pulitzer Prize of collegiate media. Other Pacemaker nominees included UCLA and USC.
