Santa Monica College to Remain Open​

Santa Monica College will be open, with classes in session on Thursday, October 31 based on current air quality. The college will remain open daily henceforth, until further notification.

SMC’s emergency management team continues to monitor the conditions related to the fires in Southern California, and is using the following agency websites to assess air quality: Purpleair.comAirnow.gov; and AQMD.gov. If anything changes, the college will update you via SMC email, the official Twitter account @SMC_edu, and the college website smc.edu for the latest updates.

Students who live in an area affected by a fire and/or have fire-related concerns should contact their instructor(s) to make appropriate accommodations; faculty and staff should contact their department chair or immediate supervisor.

Santa Monica College will be open, and classes in session Wednesday, October 30, based on current air quality.

The college’s emergency management team will continue to monitor the conditions related to the Getty Fire. SMC is using the following agency websites to assess air quality: PurpleAir.com; Airnow.gov; and AQMD.gov.

Santa Monica College’s main and satellite campuses are clear of the mandatory evacuation area of the Getty Fire. Please monitor your SMC email, the official Twitter account @SMC_edu, and the college website smc.edu for the latest updates.

SMC Reopens October 29

Santa Monica College will resume classes and campus operations today, Tuesday, October 29. Outdoor athletic activities are canceled and other outdoor activities are restricted.

SMC is not in the evacuation area of the Getty Fire, the roads are open, and there is no threat of wind until late tonight. We understand that there is a light scent of smoke in some neighborhoods and that may linger for a while due to the Getty Fire, still not fully contained. We will be evaluating the conditions throughout the day and into the evening and will keep you informed.

Based on the current conditions and information available, Santa Monica College will resume classes and campus operations on Tuesday, October 29.

Campus Closed: October 28, 2019

Santa Monica College will be closed today, Monday, October 28, because of the dynamic conditions of the Getty Fire, worsening air quality, and projected shift in wind conditions. We will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as we learn more via college email, the official Twitter account @SMC_edu, and the college website: smc.edu.
