Art Verge Best study Beaches: Lifeguard Towers 8, 17 and 18

We know that you are going to spend time at one of Santa Monica’s sparkling beaches this summer.

To study.

So we’re offering several suggestions on the best spot to unfurl your blanket and crack the binding of your copy of “Moby Dick.” Our suggestions come from a variety of beach experts, including SMC history Professor Art Verge. Dr. Verge knows almost as much about the local coastal scene as he does the American revolution because he spent a tough 16 summers lifeguarding at Santa Monica beaches.

Our sources tell us that the best beaches are at Lifeguard Towers 8, 17 and 18, for different reasons.

Dr. Verge’s pick is Tower 8, roughly at the foot of Montana Avenue. It’s a nice family beach; it’s sheltered from riptides; and it’s just north of the famed Jonathan Club, where the well-heeled work on their tans.

Tower 18 is on Will Rogers State Beach, across the street from Patrick’s Road House (a favorite breakfast. spot for a number of celebs). It attracts tourists from throughout the world, championship volleyball players and a good assortment of singles.

For solitude and quiet, Tower 17—one tower north—is the place to go. It attracts fewer people because there is no adjacent parking. Happy studying!
