"The servant-leader is servant first… It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first." - Robert K. Greenleaf. Servant leadership is a philosophy and set of practices that enriches the lives of individuals, builds better organizations and ultimately creates a more just and caring world.
The Ambassador Program is grounded in the philosophy of Servant Leadership, and engages current and future alumni of Santa Monica College in the praxis of Mattering and College success.
President’s Ambassadors are the official student representatives for Santa Monica College and the President’s Office. They showcase the excellence of Santa Monica College to the community and are role models of professionalism, hospitality, character, and SMC Pride. President’s Ambassadors provide student leadership, assist at college events and community functions, give campus tours, serve as guides for special guests of the College, present to classes, clubs and organizations, and they promote college success, campus involvement, and academic excellence.
Student Ambassadors also play an important role in student success and equity. They engage in various roles across campus, some of which include campus jobs, club leadership, and participating on college committees. This ambassador experience is an opportunity for students to develop leadership skills and ability, serve as peer navigators to support their fellow Corsairs on their academic journey, develop a strong foundation in professionalism, and positively affect the SMC Community.
If you've ever taken a class at SMC, you are an SMC Alum! The Alumni Ambassadors program provides an opportunity for Alumni to get involved, share their stories and experiences with prospective students, and mentor Future Alumni as they prepare to transfer into new careers, schools, and future endeavors. If you are interested in becoming an Alumni Ambassador, you can submit an application here.
The Ambassadors program provides leadership opportunities for current and Future Alumni. Our Ambassadors promote the College's mission to provide an inclusive and dynamic learning environment that supports students in achieving their educational goals, promote student and alumni leadership, and foster a lifelong commitment to the college.
A little history on the program: Our President's Ambassador's program began at Santa Monica College in 2009 with just a handful of students. Vice President of Student Affairs, Michael Tuitasi, introduced the program to Santa Monica College. Dean of Students, Deyna Hearn, who long envisioned developing leadership training for students, led and fostered its development until 2012 when the program transitioned with an initiative to develop the Alumni Relations program, under the leadership of Deirdre Weaver, Director of Student and Alumni Relations. The President's Ambassadors program has since grown to support as many as 30 Ambassadors, and has recently expanded to include more opportunities in leadership for both student ambassadors and alumni ambassadors.
