Internship Program Types

There are two types of Internship Programs:

(1) General Internship
The GENERAL INTERNSHIP need not be related to the student's educational or career goal. It is designed to enhance classroom learning by providing students with on-the-job work experience. Students must arrange an approved internship prior to enrolling in one of the classes listed below.
  • Does not need to be related to students' educational or career goals.
  • On-the-job learning.
  • All students are required to attend an INTERNSHIP ORIENTATION meeting at the beginning of the General Internship. Call the Internship Program for meeting times.

(2) Occupational Internship
The internship must be related to the student's educational or career goal. It is designed to help students combine college curriculum with on-the-job learning experiences and is for students beginning, changing or advancing in a career, or moving ahead in a major.

  • Students enhance classroom learning in these programs by working on on-campus or off-campus jobs.
  • Students achieve learning objectives through work experiences designed to help them expand their career options, learn about the "work culture" and develop new job skills.
  • Students earn college credit based on the number of internship hours worked. Each unit of college credit requires 75 paid or 60 unpaid (volunteer) hours of work per semester.
  • Students must arrange an approved internship prior to enrolling in one of the classes listed below.
  • All students are required to attend an Internship Orientation Meeting at the beginning of the Internship.

Call the INTERNSHIP PROGRAM staff of the Career Services Center for help in finding an internship or to answer questions: 310-434-4337.
