What is FYE?
The First Year Experience (FYE) program is a student success program for first year students. Participating students will receive guaranteed English and Math classes for the year. In addition to guaranteed courses, students will receive early course enrollment dates for the year.
Who is eligible to apply to FYE?
FYE accepts recent high school graduates who have no previous college experience. Those students must have been accepted into SMC, gone through the college's online orientation, taken the SMC assessments, and completed an FYE application in order to be considered for acceptance.
How long does the program last?
Accepted FYE students are a part of the program during their first year at SMC. Students must follow program guidelines and meet
deadline requirements to remain in the program.
What happens if I miss the counseling contact deadlines?
If all program requirements are not met, including missing counselor contact deadlines, your priority enrollment may be affected.
What other requirements does FYE have?
Once accepted, students must participate in one of the three
summer program options available only to FYE students:
Summer Jams, or
More information about the differences between these summer options.
Can I participate in more than one summer program?
Students must receive counselor approval in order to participate in more than one summer program.
Can I participate in another special program in addition to FYE?
Yes, as long as all requirements for FYE are fulfilled.
If I am a high school concurrent student, can I still apply to FYE?
Yes. Students taking classes through a high school concurrent program are still eligible to apply to FYE; however, students who are not recent high school graduates are not eligible.
How can I apply to FYE?
The application period for First Year Experience 2017-2018 is closed.
Is FYE a mandatory program for first-time students?
No, it is completely voluntary; however, First Year Experience is a great program that assists students who have never attended college before.
If I drop my Math or English course, will I be dismissed from FYE?
Currently, you can remain in the program; however, it is strongly advised to take a Math and English course both semesters you are in FYE so you can stay on track with your educational plan.
How will I know if I am accepted into FYE?
Once students apply to the program and have met the
program requirements, they will receive an acceptance email, informing them on the next steps to take.
This is my last semester in FYE. Can I remain in the program next year?
Unfortunately, not at this time. FYE is only for first time college students who recently graduated from high school.
