Adding Content

To add Images or Documents to your page, you will use the "Insert" tab in the SharePoint Ribbon. Both the "Picture" and "Link" buttons include drop down menus with choices.

The easiest choice is "From Address," but you need to prep your files and upload them in advance. Once they uploaded and in place, you can copy and paste the web address of your files to add to the "From Address" form in the drop down menus. Us the "Picture" button for images and graphics, and the "Link" button for documents. Learn more about formatting your images and documents.

You can upload your files two ways:

Site Contents

Use the gear icon drop down menu and choose the "Site Contents" link. You will see a group of large "folder" icons that take you to the location and storage of your content. You'll be interested in both the "Images" and "Documents" folders.

Lists, Libraries, and other Apps icons from the Site Contents link.

When you click on the folder icons, you will see a list or thumbnails of your existing content.

  1. Upload multiple files at a time by dragging and dropping your files into this location.

  2. Once in place, hover over the thumbnail (for an image) or find the Document from the list and click on the ellipsis (...) and you will see the web address of your image/document. Copy the address.

  3. To add an image to your page, place a cursor on the page where you want the image. To add a document, select the text you want to use as the link to the document on the page.

  4. Choose the "From Address" field from the Picture/Links drop down menus and paste the web address of the file into the form.

Content and Structure

Use the gear icon drop down menu and choose the "Site Settings" link. Choose the "Content and Structure" link from the choices, and you will see a list of (rather than large icons) of the structure of your content.

List of Site Content from the Content and Structure page.

You can click on either the "Image" or "Documents" folder and you will see a list of the available files, along with some controls across the top of the lists.

  1. Upload new files from the "New" drop down menu. You can only upload one file at a time using this method.

  2. Once in place, click on the file name, and it will open in a new window/tab in your browser.

  3. To add an image to your page, place a cursor on the page where you want the image. To add a document, select the text you want to use as the link to the document on the page.

  4. Choose the "From Address" field from the Picture/Links drop down menus and paste the web address of the file into the form.

Adding Links

Adding links works the same way as adding a document:

  1. Find the website you want to link to.

  2. In the editor, select the text you want to make the link.

  3. Use the "Link" button and choose the "From Address" choice.

  4. Copy and Paste the web address into the form.

Tip: Having more than one window or tab open in your web browser helps you copy and paste web addresses quickly into your Editor.

Tip: Open documents and non-SMC websites into new tabs. This keeps the original page in the background so that your visitors don't have to find your page again once they have navigated away from your content.

Opening New Windows

Once you have created a link on a page. If you put your cursor within the link text, or highlight the link text, a "Link" tab will appear in the Ribbon. There will be two checkboxes to the right of the web address:

  • Display Icon

Use the "Display Icon" checkbox for any link to a document. This will indicate to the user the type of file they are opening. This is a curtesy as well as accessibility. Anyone on a mobile device may not want to waste data minutes downloading a large document, or a file that their device can't open.
