About the Center for Teaching Excellence
The Center for Teaching Excellence was started with funding from the 'Title V - Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) Program' under the U.S. Department of Education. The title of the grant which was awarded to SMC is "Building Foundations for Academic and Career Success". The aim of this project is to support low-income, Latino, and other traditionally underrepresented students as they pursue their academic and career goals.
From the heart of this grant arose SMC's Center for Teaching Excellence (The Center), which offers an annual Faculty Summer Institute, quarterly seminars for all faculty, departmental workshops that target career-specific improvements in math, English, and content specific-courses, as well as customized individual and small group support.
In late September of 2015, the Center for Teaching Excellence relocated from its temporary home in the lower level of the SMC Library to its permanent location in the new Media Services Building, next to the Library off of Pearl Street. The Center now calls room M104 home, with an extensive, state-of-the-art multi-media, recording, and group presentation system installed shortly after we settled in. Our whole purpose here on campus is to serve our faculty in their pursuit of personal and professional growth - we have faculty and staff trainings, events, and workshops nearly every month. Join us for one soon, or feel free to just stop by and see what's happening here at your Center for Teachng Excellence.
