High School Concurrent Enrollment Program

High School Concurrent Enrollment permits high school students the opportunity to enroll in courses at Santa Monica College or at the high school site for educational enrichment.  The purpose of the program is to provide “advanced scholastic,” “educational enrichment opportunities for a limited number of eligible pupils” as defined by Education Code, Section 48800 and 76002.

Enrollment fees will be waived for high school students participating in High School Concurrent Enrollment.  All other fees, including non-resident tuition apply.

The student must have completed the 8th grade or equivalent by the beginning of the term they wish to attend Students are limited to six units, or two classes, per semester.  Students will not be allowed to take courses in subject areas that the student previously received a grade below a C, whether taken at the college or high school level.

Credit awarded for courses taken at Santa Monica College may be used to satisfy high school subject or credit requirements, as defined by the student’s high school.

Students wishing to forfeit the college credit must file the College Credit Forfeiture Request form within the first two weeks of the term.  This decision is not reversible.

High School Concurrent Enrollment students may participate in extra-curricular activities only at the high school level.


Step 1: Apply for Admission

Now that you have completed your application for Admission to Santa Monica College, you have a few more steps to complete to qualify to attend SMC through the High School Concurrent Enrollment Program:

Step 2: All students must meet the following qualifications:

§                   You must have completed the 8th grade (be entering the 9th grade) by the beginning of the term you are applying to attend.

§                    If the class you hope to take has an English prerequisite or skills advisory, you must take the SMC English assessment and score into Level B English (English 21A or higher). 

§                     If the class you hope to take has a Math prerequisite or skills advisory, you must take the SMC Math assessment and score at the appropriate level.  Please see the SMC College Catalog for skills advisories and prerequisites.

§                     If you are taking an activity course or performance class, you do not need to take any assessments.

Examples:
- To take Chemistry10 you will need to take the Math assessment and score high enough to have met the prerequisite of Math 31.
- To take a Math class you will need to take the Math assessment and score high enough to have met the course prerequisite (as listed in the Schedule of Classes).
- To take Psychology (which has a skills advisory for English 1) you will need to take the English assessment (and score into English 21A or higher).  This class has an advisory for English 1, but it is not a prerequisite. 
- To take a Dance class, no assessments are required.  Please see the Schedule of Classes regarding any course prerequisites or skills advisories.

Step 3: What types of classes can you enroll in?

You will only be allowed to take the courses for which you have been approved by your high school counselor and SMC.
       Note:  You will not be allowed to take:

§         Courses in subject areas that the student previously received a grade below a C, whether taken at the college or high school level.

§         Physical education courses.

§         More than six units, or two classes, whichever comes first.

Step 4: You must download, read and complete the High School Concurrent Enrollment Consent  Form. Select the link provided below to get the form.
  1. Read and fill out the form completely and don't forget to sign it;
  2. Obtain the signatures from your parent(s);
  3. Have your high school counselor fill out and sign off on which courses they are approving you to take;
  4. Have your high school principal sign the form to approve your participation;
Step 5: Bring signed forms, and related information to the SMC Office of Admissions and Records to complete the admissions process.

  1. Your signed Signature Summary Page that you printed at the end of the online applicationIf you forgot to print it, one can be printed for your signature when you get to the Admissions office. 
  2. A copy of your current high school transcript;
  3. The results of your SMC English assessment test (if you are not taking an activity class) and Math assessment test (when applicable);
  4. A picture ID (you will not be processed without it).  Note:  you must come in person if you wish to be processed immediately and to know if you have been approved.  Otherwise, forms can be dropped off in the drop box and you will receive an answer and instructions by mail.
  1. If approved you will receive a date and time for you to enroll online or via telephone.

NOTE:  A separate approval must be presented for each semester or session in which the student wishes to enroll. 

Step 6: Enroll online or by telephone in the courses for which you have been approved.

Note:  HS Concurrent Enrollment students will not be assigned an enrollment priority date until all documents have been submitted to and approved by the SMC Office of Admissions and Records.  Applications are accepted for Summer/Fall terms beginning mid-March and for Winter/Spring term beginning mid-October.

SUMMER ENROLLMENT: Once all required paperwork is submitted and approved, students may enroll themselves into the prescribed classes after May 29, 2007.  Students will be notified as to the status of their application.

FALL ENROLLMENT: Once all required paperwork is submitted and approved, students may enroll themselves into the prescribed classes after July 30, 2007.  Students will be notified as to the status of their application.

What is the difference between the DUAL ENROLLMENT program and the HIGH SCHOOL CONCURRENT enrollment program?  The Dual Enrollment program hosts college level classes at various high school campus locations.  The Concurrent Enrollment program allows high school students to take college level courses on the Santa Monica College campus.
