Summary of Fees

Last updated  04/06/2005

While all efforts have been made to present complete and accurate fee information, uncertainties in state funding may result in fee changes for classes, student services, activities and health fees, parking permits, non-resident tuition, etc. Please consult an enrollment clerk in the Admission Office for up-to-date information.

Enrollment, Student Services, Activities and Health Fee:

Materials and Supplies Fees:  Some classes require additional fees for materials and supplies used during the course. Please consult the class listings in the class schedule to determine what, if any, materials and supplies fees are required.

Under certain circumstances, students may be exempt from paying enrollment fees and student services fees if they file an application for waiver with the Financial Aid Office. If you can document that you are a recipient of Aid for Families with Dependent Children (AFDC), Social Security Income (SSI), or General Relief (GR), for example, you may be exempt. Please contact the Financial Aid Office before starting enrollment procedures.

Enrollment Fee

All students, resident and non-resident, in graded credit courses must pay an enrollment fee of $26 per unit.

All fees must be paid on the same day the student enrolls in classes. Fees may be paid in cash, by check, by money order, by credit card, or by cashier's check.

There are no enrollment fees, student services fees, or health fees for adult education classes.

Student Services, Activities, and Health Fee

Students in credit classes will pay a student services fee of $27 (Winter 2003), $30 (Spring 2003), $27 (Summer 2003),  and $30 (Fall 2003). This fee includes $12 for Health Services, ($11 for Winter and Summer), $8 for student ID card, and $10 for Associated Student membership support ($9 for Winter and Summer). Associated Student membership may not be required and is voluntary.  Students wishing to opt out of the optional ASB Membership fee or the Student ID card fee can request, in-person at the Bursar’s Office or at Admissions, that these fees be removed, but must do so within two weeks of the start of the term.

Non-Resident Tuition Fee

Students who are both citizens and residents of a foreign country (including F-1 visa students) must pay an additional tuition fee of $180 per semester unit. Other non-resident students must pay a tuition fee of  $155 per semester unit (see residency information). If you are a non-resident student, please note that your fees are payable in cash, by money order, or by cashier's check. Personal checks will be accepted if it is from a California bank.

On-Campus Parking Decals

On campus parking does not guarantee you a parking space. It does entitle you to use on-campus student parking areas on a space-available, first-come first-served basis. Please note that your parking decal is for on-campus parking only -- it is not a residential (street) parking permit.

In order to use on-campus parking you must purchase a campus parking decal for  $75 for each semester. Parking for the Winter and Summer sessions is $35. Parking is free at the Airport Shuttle Lot. See Shuttle and Satellite Campus Parking.

Handicap Parking.

The display of a handicap parking placard and a Santa Monica College parking decal entitles you to park in any student or staff parking space.

Students who receive benefits under Aid to Families with Dependent Children or a general assistance program should contact the Financial Aid Office for a parking fee reduction.

Financial Aid

The community college system is funded by the state of California. If you meet residency requirements, you may attend, tuition-free, any community college in the state of California, regardless of your income. Students only pay a modest enrollment fee of $26 per semester unit. However, it costs Santa Monica College considerably more than $26 to present you with a semester unit of quality higher education. In effect, when you enroll in class at Santa Monica College, you automatically receive a "grant" from the state government valued at over $125 per unit direct cost (and many additional dollars per unit of indirect capital and support costs) to continue and advance your education.

Beyond this, the College also provides financial aid and scholarships to help you with the general cost of living while attending college. Santa Monica College offers a comprehensive package of financial aid to students. Many of these financial aid programs have early deadlines and require time to process.

If you feel that you need Financial Aid, see Financial Aid and/or stop by the Financial Aid Office to get information concerning:
