Santa Monica College has a long history of intercollegiate Athletics. As a member of the Western State Conference, we have teams in 16 different sports. Former Corsairs have been medal favorites in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney & All-Pro's in the NFL. SMC athletes have also played in the NBA, Major League Baseball, and on a world-class level in a variety of both men's and women's sports.
Members of our coaching staff are also former elite level athletes who can help you cultivate the possibilities presented by playing intercollegiate sports. Athletics provides an opportunity to continue both one's playing career and academic pursuits at a higher level after graduation.
Santa Monica College believes that Athletics is a valuable and integral part of the total collegiate experience. Athletics is a way of education through physical activities that are selected and carried out with a full regard to human growth and development. Because it is a phase of the total educational program of the College, Athletics strives for the same goals that give purpose to all other learning experiences at the college.
Athletics at Santa Monica College is governed by the state-wide organization the COA. Per Their bylaws, in order to participate as an intercollegiate student-athlete, you must be continuously enrolled in at least 12 units at Santa Monica during their season. Of these 12 units, at least 9 must be in courses that are applicable to an AA degree, remediation, certification, or transfer to another institution. These units will be monitored by the Academic Advisor for Athletics as part of an Individual Educational Plan.
Players may compete for two seasons per sport at the community college level before exhausting eligibility. In order to be eligible for a second or subsequent season, players must also meet continuing eligibility requirements. These include passing 24 units between seasons of competition, of which at least 18 are the quality described above. Players must also maintain a minimum of a 2.0 gpa.
Please note that NCAA and NAIA eligibility rules for four-year institutions are different, but that our staff can assist our players in assessing their needs prior to transfer.
