Major Preparation

Course work in social/behavioral/biological sciences, humanities, language/rationality form the broad educational base for the practice of nursing. Course work in the nursing major, taken in four semesters, prepares the student in skill acquisition and nursing knowledge in the care, support, and management of illness states as well as the promotion of health. Nursing course work includes clinical nursing laboratory experiences in a variety of clinical settings.

The nursing major has four courses that are prerequisites to its program. Some course work may require pre-preparation courses. Interested potential applicants may attend the Nursing Information Meetings conducted by the Health Sciences Department. Meeting times are posted in the Counseling Office, Health Sciences Department. Enrollment in the Nursing Program is open to persons regardless of sex, age, marital status, disability*, ethnic group, religion or national origin. Persons with previous nursing education and/or experience may be considered for advanced placement and will be evaluated on an individual basis.

Students seeking admission to the Nursing Program must meet all of the following criteria:

  • An overall grade point average of 2.5 for the Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, and Microbiology prerequisite courses with no grade less than "C" for each course, completed in the last five years, and no more than one repetition/withdrawal of any of these courses. You may repeat one of these courses. 
  • College level, transferable English, minimum of three(3) semester units with a grade no less than 'C.' 
  • A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 for all college coursework taken. 
  • Good standing student status (academic and in-progress). 
  • Successfully pass an approved Admission Assessment. 
  • Meet the minimum physical qualifications & essential functions.* 
  • Must have a negative criminal background check.
