Chemistry Program

Chemistry is often called the central science because it relates to so many other fields of study. Those who learn chemistry gain a far better understanding of the natural world around us. This knowledge is valuable for all people, and also provides a necessary basis for understanding medicine, pharmacy, engineering, forensics, environmental sciences, geology, and other related fields.

The Chemistry Program at SMC provides instruction in three areas. General Chemistry introduces principles of chemical structure and reactivity that are the foundation for all other fields of chemistry. Organic Chemistry is the study of substances that contain molecules with a carbon backbone. These are vitally important molecules as they comprise all living things. Biochemistry applies the concepts of organic chemistry to molecules and reactions that occur within living organisms. It represents the intersection of the fields of chemistry and biology.
