ACADEMIC INTEGRITY & CONDUCT

“Santa Monica College, is as a community-oriented, open-door, educational institution whose purpose is to educate and enlighten members of the community who seek knowledge. In order to uphold the academic integrity of the institution, all members of the academic community, faculty and students alike, must assume responsibility for providing an educational environment of the highest standards, characterized by a spirit of academic honesty; therefore, under no circumstances will academic dishonesty be tolerated at this institution.”

--Preamble to SMC Code of Academic Conduct

To help you understand and observe SMC’s Code of Academic Conduct and Student Conduct Code, the Assessment Center staff will delineate for you your responsibilities as a test-taker. Violations such as cheating, fabrication or falsification of information, plagiarism, abuse of academic materials, and complicity in academic dishonesty, continued disruptive behavior, continued willful disobedience, habitual profanity, etc., will result in an immediate referral to the office of Student Judicial Affairs. Cheating on any exam or willful disregard for assessment protocol will result in forfeiture of your test results and inability to retest for a minimum period of three months.

Assessment Center Rules of Conduct

Please note that by taking any test provided through the Assessment Center, you agree to follow verbal, written, or electronic directions given to you. Ignoring these will result in the immediate termination of your test and forfeiture or test results.

Computerized Testing:

Note that your English/ESL/Math test concludes when test results are displayed on your screen. You are not to reinitiate the testing program; re-enter your personal information; or start a new test unless you have expressly been directed to do so by the supervising proctor. To do so will be deemed a willful intent to retake a test without authorization and is in violation of the Assessment center’s testing policies and the SMC Student Conduct Code (Administrative Regulation 4410, sections A, G, H, K, M, and P). Failure to observe the above will result in:

  • cancellation of test results;
  • inability to retest for a minimum period of three months;
  • retesting fee of $10 per test;
  • referral to the Office of Student Judicial Affairs for disciplinary action.
