Effective March 15, 2003 , all first-time college students attending SMC are required to complete English and Mathematics assessment. Students will not be permitted to register for courses until this requirement is met. Placement waivers may be granted if students meet SMC's “Assessment Exemptions” as indicated below; or based on applicable coursework completed with a “C” or better (student must have transcript); or by completing an approved English and math test at another accredited college. Students completing assessments from other colleges may bring their test results for evaluation. Please note that although students may be exempt from the mandatory assessment requirement, an appropriate and equivalent course at SMC must be available.
