IS THE ENGLISH OR ESL ASSESSMENT REQUIRED?

English and ESL Assessment is required of all new first time college students attending Santa Monica College and of all students who wish to enroll in an English or ESL course for the first time.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF ENGLISH OR ESL ASSESSMENT?

The purpose of English assessment is to place you in an English or ESL class at the level where you are most likely to succeed.

WHAT DETERMINES SUCCESS IN ENGLISH OR ESL?

One of the most important measures is your current skill level in reading and writing. However, the department also recognizes the importance of study skills, time management skills, previous grades in English and/or ESL, completion of course prerequisites, motivation, the length of time since your last ESL class, and/or the length of time since your last ESL class in your country.
