Do you want to be a more successful student? Here are just a few of the opportunities and accomplishments students have had through campus involvement: •
Provide extended library hours. Join the Associated Students Government! The A.S. offers students the opportunity to promote the interest of their fellow students in the operation of the college – including the instructional support systems, student services, financial support services, alumni programs, budget and planning. The following are some opportunities for you to participate in student government. The Associated Students includes a 12-member Board of Directors and a Student Trustee who are elected each spring semester. A.S. Commissioners are volunteers who are appointed by directors to assist in carrying out the directors’ goals and serve on committees. Students are urged to take advantage of the opportunities to serve in student government. Information and applications are available through the Student Activities Office in the Cayton-Associated Students Center. Join a Club! One of the best ways to become involved in campus life is to join a student club. Each semester there are approximately 60 clubs that cover a wide range of interests. Current clubs include areas such as: major, career, culture, academic achievement, service, religion, support services, sports, social awareness, personal interest and many more. Club
meetings are generally held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 11:15 a.m.
to In addition, one representative from each club is a member of the Inter-Club Council, an organization dedicated to fostering interaction and cooperation among the clubs. The ICC sponsors events such as Club Row to bring the groups together. The Chairperson of the ICC also serves on the Board of Directors. Pick up a Club List at the Student Activities Office in the Cayton-Associated Students Center. This will give you information about the clubs, their purpose, where and when they meet. You are welcome to attend the meetings of any club you are interested in, and then decide which one or more you may want to join. Forming a New Club Starting a club is simple; it requires six SMC students with A.S. membership and a full-time faculty member as advisor. Visit the Student Activities office to obtain a club registration packet and sample constitution as well as assistance starting your club. When the paperwork and the constitution are approved, the new club will receive official campus recognition and will be installed into the Inter-Club Council. Each club will have a mailbox in the Student Activities Office. |
