In his 24th year at Santa Monica College,
Robert Taylor enters his 14th season as
the Corsairs’ Head Football Coach.
In addition to being SMC’s first African American head
football coach, Taylor is also one of only ten in the nation
to hold that position at the community college level. As
head of SMC’s recruiting and placement, Coach Taylor is
primarily responsible for preparing players for the demands
of Division IA, IIA, and other four-year colleges. Since
1980, a large percent of Santa Monica football players have
transferred to four-year colleges.
Asked about his responsibilities as a coach, Taylor
responded, “Each year, my staff and myself must become
better coaches for these student-athletes. It is important
that positive role models are seen within the community and
to our student athletes. I believe I can help by being a
good and positive leader and coach.”
After receiving his high school diploma from Jonathan Law
High School in Milford, Connecticut, Taylor attended Allan
Hancock College, where he received an Associate of Arts
degree and also played football under the instruction of
legendary NFL icon John Madden. In 1968, he received a
Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from
Central Connecticut State.
Taylor proceeded to get a master’s degree from Cal State Los
Angeles in 1974.
