Interior Architectural Design

Santa Monica College participates in a Regional Interior Design Consortium with five other colleges: Mt. San Antonio College, Orange Coast College, Long Beach City College, Fullerton College, and Saddleback College. All required interior design courses are articulated with these schools and students may take interior design courses at any of the colleges in the consortium. Each of the Regional Colleges has chosen advanced level design studios such as Kitchen and Bath Design, Hospitality and Office Design, Model Homes and Health Care, Lighting and Retail Design. Santa Monica College has chosen as its specialty for the advanced level design studios Production Design for Film and TV and Furniture Design.
There are three levels to this program:
Level I – Interiors Merchandising
Provides a short term program leading to employment in retail furnishings and sales. Students who complete a minimum of 22 units are awarded a Certificate.
Level II – Interior Design Preprofessional
Provides a program which meets the accreditation standards for the preprofessional assistant level leading to employment as a design assistant. Interior Design Assistants work with Interior Design Practitioners through selection and specification of furnishings and materials, as well as drafting, illustration, and merchandising. The Preprofessional Assistant requires an Associate Degree or higher from an accredited college before the certificate will be awarded. Students who do not already have a degree must complete the SMC Graduation Requirements for the AA Degree including General Education Requirements. (Consult the SMC counseling office for GE Requirements.)
Level III – Interior Design Professional
Provides a program which meets the accreditation standards for the professional level of education leading to employment and certification as a professional interior designer. Students are prepared to practice as full professional interior designers and meet the requirements for examination and certification. Students are required to complete the requirements for a Bachelor’s Degree. Santa Monica College has articulated the program with California State University, Dominguez Hills with either a Bachelor of Arts through the Program for Adult College Education (PACE) in Interdisciplinary Studies or a Bachelor of Science in Applied Studies.
A Certificate may be granted after completion of each level of the program. The student may also be eligible for the A.A. Degree upon completion of Level II courses and additional A.A. degree requirements. The student may also be eligible for a baccalaureate degree upon completion of Level III courses and appropriate degree requirements at a four-year university.
