WATER

Can you imagine a world without fresh, clean water to drink and play in?  Supplies of clean fresh water are declining worldwide due to pressures from population growth, unsustainable land-use practices, and increasing diversion of water for use in agriculture.  The growth of cities pushes the demand for water above the available supplies and contributes to contamination of water from urban runoff, toxic chemicals and bacteria.

This pollution creates unsafe creeks and beaches for us to swim in, as well as harmful conditions for local wildlife.  Many of our natural creeks have been concreted over, so the water is unable to percolate water and naturally cleanse out pollutants.

Text Box: What You Can Do
1. Find and fix leaks - Dripping faucets and leaking toilets account for as much as 14% of all indoor water use, equal to 10 gallons per person of water lost per day.
2. Install low-flow devices - A family of four could save 14,000 gallons of water a year if they installed a low flow showerhead. Installing an aerator on your kitchen faucet could reduce indoor water use by as much as 4%.
3. Eat less beef and other water-consuming foods - Producing water consuming foods affects the demand for and quality of land and water. Producing these products uses excessive amounts of water.
