Independent Volunteer Opportunities
If you would like to earn hours at an Independent Event that is not
already on the approved list, then you must contact the AGS President to
make arrangements for you to present your Independent Hours Opportunity at an
AGS Board meeting. You must obtain
a letter from the organization, printed on organization letterhead,
signed by an official of the organization, indicating the planned
dates, planned number of hours to be worked, and the type of duties to
be performed. The
Opportunity must be open and available to any other AGS member who may
be
interested.
Hours completed at an Independent Volunteer Opportunity will only
count if
the hours were approved by the AGS Board BEFORE the hours were
earned.
Each time that you go to an Independent Volunteer event, you must
have an AGS
Independent Hours sheet to be filled out in ink and signed by the event
coordinator or representative. If there are changes to the form,
they must be initialed by the representative. The printed name and
phone contact of the repre-
sentative must also be on the Independent Hours form.
Remember: You must complete a total of 20 hours in order to
receive recognition. A maximum of 10 hours may come from independent
volunteer opportunities. A minimum of 10 hours must come from
attendance of at least 2 events. It is your responsibility to track
all independent volunteer opportunities with the Independent Hours
Sheet.
You can also obtain independent hours sheet, from Applications & Forms page.

John Adams Middle School
- Description:
- Tutoring students in grades six through eight at John Adams Middle School
- Location:
- The school is located right across the street from Santa Monica College, on the corner of Pearl Street and 16th Street.
- Types of Volunteer Tutoring:
- ONE-ON-ONE TUTORING:
- A tutor able to commit to at least one hour per week for the entire school year will be assigned a specific student with whom the tutor will work each week. This would take place during JAMS school hours, or right after school. The match would be made according to hours available, and subject strengths. Tutors can work their hour(s) anytime Mondays through Thursdays: 8:30-4:45 p.m., Fridays: 9:30-2:48.
A tutor who works in this capacity is encouraged to provide more than academic assistance. We ask that they become a role model and mentor as well, helping their student with organization, time management, and other necessary study skills important for student success. The impact of such a relationship on the JAMS student here is immeasurable. - SMART MOVES:
- A tutor who is able to commit specifically to Wednesday afternoons from 3-5 for the entire school year can work with a new program called Smart Moves, a tutoring project already in place. The tutors would attend a training, and then work one-on-one with an assigned student. Participating in the project is a wonderful opportunity for both the tutor and JAMS student.
- DROP-IN TUTORING:
- A tutor unable to commit to regular weekly sessions or make a yearlong commitment but is still interested in volunteering at JAMS can work after school with students. JAMS has a program where teachers are available after school for drop-in tutoring in the library. The subject need is potluck, depending on the JAMS students who come in. An SMC tutor is most welcome to provide help in this program with the teachers. This program takes place Mondays through Thursdays, from 3-4:45.
- Signing Up For the Program
- A potential tutor initially will need to complete two forms: an application form and a TB Test form. All tutors are required to have a recent TB test. TB tests are given free of charge in the SMC Health Office if needed. After getting the TB test results (or using past test results not older than two years), the forms can be submitted to me, Patti Nakao, or to Maria Rodriguez, our wonderful point person at JAMS.
- Next, the tutor will meet with Ms. Rodriguez. She will give a brief orientation, then provide the next steps on how the student can get started, depending on the type of tutoring the SMC student will be offering. This should be a pretty quick process so the student can get started right away!

Westwood Hospital
- Application:
- How Do I Get Started?:
- To become a volunteer, all candidates must attend an orientation. There are separate orientations for students and non-students. Afterwards, potential volunteers are personally interviewed by a coordinator then matched to an appropriate department.
- Student Program:
- All high school, undergraduate, graduate and professional school students are welcome. Over 300 volunteer positions offer unlimited opportunities for students to explore various healthcare-related positions. This program keeps in mind that students often have time constraints that require flexible scheduling. The Volunteer Services Youth Coordinator works to make your volunteering experience a valuable asset towards your career goals. With 100 hours of service, you will receive a letter of recommendation. Each year, up to 10 student volunteers are awarded scholarships. Finalists and winners are announced late each spring at a special event.
- How Can I Find Out More?:
- For additional information about becoming a UCLA Medical Center volunteer, or the date of the next orientation, please call the Department of Volunteer Services at (310) 825-6002.
