Go Around the World

Santa Monica College has lost more than just classes since the cutbacks hit campus, but culture inside the class room has suffered as well. Most ethnic studies courses were taken off the fall 2003 schedule.

To make up for this loss, all culturally oriented clubs decided to educate students about their roots through a multi-cultural fair, titled "Around the World in Two Days."

The fair was first held yesterday and will be presented again tomorrow, Thursday, Nov. 20, at the campus Clocktower.

"The fair is a lot different than Club Row's showcase," said Juanette T. Davis, SMC activities director.

On Thursday, SMC international clubs will give students a tour around the world in two days.

Decorations of ethnic ornaments will turn the Clocktower lawn into another world.

"I am extra excited. The clubs are excited," Davis said. "It's going to be an awesome event."

Yesterday, clubs distributed free food. The Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPI) gave out fortune cookies and egg rolls.

Each club also has a mini exhibit based on the history of their country.

Pamphlets and informational fliers help students further educate themselves about a world outside of their own.

"It's a great opportunity for all cultural clubs to expose their own culture," said Alex Hwang, spokesperson for AAPI.

On Thursday, the clubs will throw a fashion show with different types of clothing from several countries.

Today's and yesterday's style will be lighting up the runway.

According to Davis , club members will be bringing clothes straight out of their grandparent's closets.

"The fair is a great way to show the background on these clubs. They all have rich histories and everyone should know about it," said SMC student Chris Adams.
