0 STEPS FOR SUCCESS
Emmy Award-winning television journalist and author
Yolanda Nava will give a free lecture on Thursday at 11:15 a.m.
in Art Lecture Hall 214 at Santa Monica College .
The lecture, "How You Can Get There from Here: 10 Steps for Success," will
be an inspirational talk that will focus on things that Nava says
she wishes she had known when she was in school.
Aside from her work as a television journalist and author, Nava
is an educator, consultant and community leader. Nava also writes
a column for Eastern Group Publications, the nation's largest chain
of bilingual newspapers.
Nava's book, "It's All in the Frijoles," is a book of virtues,
based on a rich compilation of anecdotes from heroes whose teachings
have helped mold the character for generations.
It won the 2001 Best Self-Help Book Award from the Latino Literary
Hall of Fame at Book Expo in America .
CONCERT SEEKS TO SAVE PROGRAMS
SMC's Applied Music Program will hold a benefit concert at 8 p.m.
on Friday in SMC's Concert Hall.
The program, which has lost state funding because of the budget
crisis, provides private music lessons to SMC music majors.
On the program will be an eclectic repertory featuring original
compositions by SMC students and voice and instrumental performances
by students on piano, guitar, trombone, flute, violin, string bass
and more. Styles range from classical to jazz.
OPERA HIGHLIGHTS
SMC's Opera Theatre will present "An Evening of Opera
Highlights" at 8 p.m. on Saturday in the SMC Concert Hall.
The Emmy Award-winning Opera Theater is under the artistic direction
of Sue Ann Pinner, an SMC voice professor, professional opera singer
and internationally renowned recording artist, who won a 2001 Emmy
for the video of the SMC production of "Faust."
The event will feature selections from Mozart's "Don Giovanni," Donizetti's "The
Daughter of the Regiment" and Strauss' "Die Fledermaus."
In addition, it will feature selections from Moore 's "The Ballad
of Baby Doe," which incorporates American folk melodies.

BERKELEY IN THE SIXTIES
A 1960s-Style "Teach-In" featuring a screening of
the documentary " Berkeley in the Sixties" will be presented Friday
from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. in Art 214.
Twenty points of extra credit will be awarded to those students
in Prof. Kanin's classes who attend the entire program. |
